5 Common Excuses That Limit Your Potential

Have you set some intentions for the year but already made excuses not to take any action? Excuses are a common way we make ourselves feel better about not achieving our goals; a defence mechanism used to justify our non-actions. Excuses help to cover up our worst fears in life and stop us from moving forward. The first step to get past it; acknowledge what excuses you are making and how they are holding you back.

5 Common Excuses

“I am not ready”– Just one more practice and I will be there. If I save this much more I can do it. When I am a bit more prepared it will be time.

The truth is, there will never be an exact moment when life tells you to take that step. Something can always hold you back if you let it. Life is happening now. It is happening all around you. Why not step up and step into it right now?

Start taking the steps you need to do now so that you will get closer to your goal, quicker. And enjoy the journey.

“I don’t have enough time”- Life is just too busy right now. I have too much to do to shift my focus.

How much time do you need? Seriously ask yourself that question. Think about the thing you are trying to achieve and work out how much time you need to take every day/week/month in order to succeed. What parts of your life need to change in order to prioritise this?

If you can’t prioritise this goal right now it is very possible that this is not something you actually want.

“I’m too old” or “I’m too young”– I am way too old to start a new hobby. People won’t take me seriously because of my youth.

You can do anything you put your mind to if you believe in yourself and are willing to work for it. Age shouldn’t come into it – it is never too late or too early to set goals. There is no age limit on happiness.

“I don’t have enough money”–It will cost too much. I just don’t have the finances right now.

This is similar to the ‘no time’ excuse. How much money do you actually need? If you are serious about doing this are you ready to change your priorities?

If this is really what you want, you will make it work. If money is an obstacle, take small steps to get to where you want to be.

“I don’t know how”- I don’t know how to make it work. I don’t know what to do. I don’t know where to start.

With so much information out there, at literally a touch of a button, this excuse has got to stop. There are ‘how to’ guides for literally everything all over the internet. There are also so many people who are willing to offer their advice if you reach out and ask.

Once you jump in you will be surprised at how much you do know and how much you will learn on the way.

Sound familiar?

These excuses, and so many others, are what keep us from being the people we are meant to be. They stop us from putting ourselves out there and getting the things we want. There will always be excuses but in reality, it is up to you what you do with them.

It is up to you if you push past the excuses and take action. What will you do?
